One bill would increase energy independence; the other would force greater dependence on foreign imports, Western business leaders say

LAKEWOOD, CO (Sept. 22, 2009) Two competing bills in the House Natural Resources Committee starkly illustrate a choice facing Congress today, say Western business leaders: promote greater American energy independence by supporting responsible development of the nation's natural resources, or push the U.S. toward increased reliance on foreign energy imports by advancing legislation that seeks to limit domestic access and production.

The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) today announced that it is removing from consideration its proposed Agricultural Use Protection rule.

In response to a report from two independent consultants that was critical of the scientific basis for the proposed rule, DEQ invited the authors to visit the Powder River Basin for in-depth field tours, to interview irrigators and CBM producers, and review the department's permitting practices.  Following those tours, the consultants provided DEQ with a more detailed assessment, which is the basis for today's decision.

"There are many wasteful and wild schemes born in Washington--but this takes the cake. There is not a single national forest in the nation's capitol. Yet D.C. was awarded $2.8 million in wildland fire management funding. The last major fire in D.C. was likely lit by British troops in 1814," Barrasso said.

"This once-secret report confirms everything we already knew about the President's energy tax scheme. This is yet another example of the Administration keeping secret the hidden costs of this energy tax," Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) said.
